Sonya Battla Pakistani Dress Designer

Sonya Battla was born in karachi, Pakistan. She attended the prestigious Karachi Grammar School right upto her A-Levels finishing school in 1989. She secured her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art with a major in Womenswear Fashion from the American College in London, UK. Attended a one year fashion course at St,Martin’s College of Art & Design, London, UK. Fine-tuning her fashion skills, Janice Wainwright and Toni Taster (well respected names in the fields of draping and pattern-making) provided further opportunities to Soniya to strenght her return to Karachi, Sonya Battla formed her own label ” Tiraz- Sonya Battla “ in 1986. She started a small business in manufature and retail of her work wich has grown over the last ten years. She now has a pret-a-porter line sold at her Boutique in Karachi’s Zamzama district,and designs a formal “Sonya Battla” by order which includes embellished and unembellished couture work. She has held and participated in numerous fashion shows.

While women wear remains her focus a men’s line is available at her boutique. She seeks inspiration from nature and its organic from and movement particularly fascinate her. She enjoys researching the rich handicraft tribal communities that still exist in Pakistan and have managed to hold onto their traditional methods of rendering embroidery, gilt-craft and weaving, consequently one finds traces of their craft reflected in Sonia’s awesome work. Her list of clints is long and distinguished and includes people from the world over. As a result she has a attrected press attention from various countries including India, UK , France, USA, to name a few beyond Pakistan. She continues to work from Karach and believes Pakistan has a rich variety to offer a discerning individual from all over the world.

Sonya Battla has always preferred to remain low profile but there’s no denying the fact that despite the lack of hype she generates, she is one of the Best Designer in Pakistan. Her creations are restrained yet amazingly elegant and the clothes she designs flatter the women who wear them instead of overpowering or overwhelming them.

The queen of cuts, Sonya is one designer whose shop it is a thrill to visit. There is nothing tasteless there – ever and there is always something that you just have to have. And the clothes change regularly. Sonya Battla does not recycle her designs, she develops them, in sync with international trends that she adapts to fit in with the cultural requirements of urban Pakistan. Equally adept at cutting a jacket as she is at cutting a flowing number, Sonya has had to restrain some of her innate creativity.
